Meu nome é Tatiana, tenho 39 anos e só tive férias uma vez na vida. Se você achou essa declaração parecendo discurso de grupo de auto-ajuda, você está certa. E eu gostaria de compartilhar com vocês minha experiência de procurar trabalho no Canadá. Mas preciso começar com a experiência do que eu tive de fazer para não surtar primeiro.

Isso é muito sério, mudar de país definitivamente não é para qualquer um. Não mesmo, nem para qualquer dois. Eu cheguei aqui há apenas dois meses, mas me achava a pessoa mais descolada de todas, por que era produtora, sabia fazer pesquisas, era ótima em listas, escrevia bem, tinha várias habilidades. Nunca tinha ficado sem trabalhar. Atuei em várias áreas, fiz freelance, corria de um lugar para outro, porque era articulada e tinha network.
This is extremely serious, change of country definitely is not a thing to anyone. I'm serious, neighter two. I came here just two months, and I used to consider myself as the coolest person because I was producer, I knew to do researches and I was great in lists, I used to write pretty well, and I had a lot of skils. But I never stayed without working. I acted in a lot of areas, I did freelance, I used to run from a place to another, because I was articulated and I had networking.

Pois bem, esquece. É claro que cada caso é um caso, mas assim que eu cheguei aqui e consegui pôr a casa em ordem, esqueci todo o resto. Queria estar de férias, mas a cabeça não deixava; pensava na conta do banco no final do dia. Queria encontrar emprego, mas não sabia como explicar o que eu fazia. Não conhecia os cargos e, no fundo, estava apavorada demais até para pedir qualquer trabalho menor.
So, forget about it. Unquestionably, each case is a case, however, when I came here I put the house in order, I forgot about everything. Solução: pedir dicas aos amigos que vieram antes. Dito e feito, perguntei à Isabel de Vancouver, à Letícia de Montreal, à Eliana de Toronto e “googlei” todas as #brasileiraspelomundo. Todas, sem exceção, me disseram: calma fica tranquila, isso é super normal. Existe, sim, ajuda, é só procurar.  Faz assim, começa fazendo uma lista de onde seria o local ideal para trabalhar. Depois, lista os festivais e lugares bacanas para fazer voluntariado, ganhar experiência e recobrar a confiança. Em paralelo, lista seus skills e pensa em que função bá sica voce gostaria de trabalhar, e onde.
Solution: ask friends tip that came before. Yeah, I asked to Isabel from Vancouver, to Leticia, and I googled every #brasileiraspelomundo. All of them, without exception, they told me: calm down, this is super normal. Yes, there is help and it's just look for it. Start creating one list where would be the ideal local to work. After that, list of festival and cool places to do volunteering, earn experience and retake the confidence. In parallel, list your skills and think in which basic function you would like to work and where.

Parecia óbvio, mas fez toda a diferença. Planilha a postos, a a cabeça começou a entrar no lugar. A segunda dica foi procurar uma das agências do governo que te ajudam a se assentar, se reconstruir e se levantar. Pois é, o governo de Ontario tem um serviço super bacana para newcommers e newlanders, mas que funciona para quem tem um visto de trabalho temporário, ou para quem está estudando. (é claro, que quem está estudando pode usar o college para isso, normalmente este serviço está arrolado no altíssimo custo da tuition). Então lá fui eu, ligar e agendar visitas e todos os tipos de serviços e workshops gratuitos que eu tinha direito. O mais importante era botar a cara na rua e começar a falar e escutar o inglês diariamente.

So, I came there, called and rescheduled visits and every types of services and free workshops that I had right. The most important was to put the body in the street and start talking and listening daily English.

Ligando para um dos números indicados nos milhares de folhetos que existem desde o aeroporto, biblioteca e em grandes avisos nos metrôs, fui direcionada ao serviço mas próximo. Quem me recebeu foi uma agência especializada em mulheres, a Newcommerswomen. Já na sala de espera fiquei emocionada; folhetos falando de empoderamento feminino, várias mulheres negras, trans, de turbante. Mulheres que muitas das vezes em seus países eram proibidas de trabalhar, agora buscavam, lado a lado comigo, uma palavra amiga de incentivo e dicas sobre como fazer seu currículo aparecer.

A Aisha, funcionária que me atendeu, perdeu uma semana refazendo meu currículo, coisa que qualquer site de RH cobraria uma pequena fortuna. Ela me mandou um email gigante dando dicas de como  socializar (existe um site chamado Meetup para pessoas se encontrarem de acordo com seus interesses, mas não tem só aqui em Toronto não) em Toronto e como voluntariar. E falou também que eu poderia fazer um teste gratuito de inglês no Toronto Catholic Board, que era ainda mais barato que os ESL da biblioteca pública, que só da aula para imigrantes, se eu precisasse de aulas para melhorar a fluência. Ela também me disse para procurar a YMCA.
The Aisha, employee that attended me, lost one week rebuilding my curriculum, thing that any RH would charge me a small fortuned. She sent me a giant email giving me tips of how to socialize (there is a site called Meetup to people to meet according to with their interesting, but its not only in Toronto). She told as well that I could to a free test in Toronto Catholic Board, that was even more cheaper than the ESL from public library, that it just give class to immigrants, if I needed some classes to improve the influence. She also told me to find the YMCA.

Todo  mundo conhece a música, mas nunca prestou atenção na letra até precisar entender o que ela diz. O YMCA existe desde 1844, ajudando pessoas a sair dos maiores perrengues. Os projetos vão desde workshops para ensinar como os canandeses são no ambiente de trabalho, a piscinas gratuitas, a inventar o basketball (Sim foi um professor canadense que inventou o basquete, dentro de um YMCA em Boston), e feiras de emprego. Lá quem me atendeu foi o Wilson, um colombiano fofo que é fã do Zico. Ele disse que o canadense tem o hábito de mudar de emprego, rumo, carreira, pelos menos sete vezes durante a vida, por isso eles entendem o que é se recolocar. Ele me mandou um email hoje com informações sobre várias empresas recrutando. Esse serviço era só para quem já imigrou, mas ele foi com a minha cara. É claro que ele está falando para eu começar em vendas, e talvez até em empregos mais simples, tais como limpeza, empacotamento. Ele disse que pode me arranjar um emprego na fábrica da Oreo, mas eu decidi tentar primeiro na minha área.
Everybody knows the song, but never paid attention in the lyrics until need to understand what it tells. The YMCA exists since 1844, helping people to get out of bad situations. The projects go since workshopts to teach how the Canadians are in the job environment, the free pools, to create the basketball (yes it was one Canadian teacher that invented the basketball, inside one YMCA in Boston) and Holidays job. There who attended me was Wilson, one fuffy Colombian that is Zico fans. He told that Canadian has the habit of change employment, heading, career, at least seven time during the life, because they know how is to relocate. He sent me an email today with information about a lot of companies recruiting. This service is just to who already have immigrated, but we liked me. Of couse, he is saying to me start in selling, and maybe in simpler jobs, such as cleaning and packaging. He told me he can arrange me a job in the Oreo manufacture, but I decided to try in my area first.

Peguei todos os conselhos, incluindo criar meu perfil no linkedin (e IMDB, no meu caso, para a indústria de mídia) e começei a pesquisar. Dito e feito. E não é que está funcionando? Eu acabei fazendo um filme como voluntária, tenho um comercial marcado para gravar, um festival de cinema comunitário para desenvolver, e um encontro com uma brasileira que trabalha na indústria e passou por tudo isso quando chegou, e que quer me ajudar.
I got all the advices, including create my own Linkedin profile (and IMDB, in my case, who is from media industry) and I started to looking for. And now this is working! I started doing one filme as volunteer, I have one schedule commercial to recorde, one festival communitary cinema as volunteer, one scheduled commercial to film..

Ah, e minha namorada, que nem estava procurando, conseguiu um emprego na sala de equipamentos de cinema da faculdade.

Resumindo, não é fácil, mas também não é impossível; basta perder o medo, afinal você já teve coragem de sair do país.

Certamente uma das principais perguntas que eu recebo dos meus leitores é “quanto de dinheiro eu preciso ter para viver em Toronto?” e seus derivados como “quanto eu preciso ganhar?” ou “quanto eu preciso trazer do Brasil?”. A resposta a estas perguntas é muito difícil pois o gasto mensal depende muito do estilo da vida da pessoa. E eu falo isso não somente pensando que tem gente que gosta de sair para jantar 1x por semana ou tem gente que precisa comprar roupas novas todo mês. O fato aqui é que gastos básicos – como aluguel – também são bem pessoais já que existem pessoas que querem morar em um apartamento legal e outras não se importam em morar em um basement com mais 4 amigos.
Obviously, one of the main questions that I receive from my readers is "How much money do I need to have to live in Toronto?" and a lot of similar things such as "how much do I need to earn?" or "how much do I need to bring from Brazil?". The answer to these questions is pretty hard because the monthly expense depends on a lot the personal lifestyle. And I tell this one only thinking about that there are people who enjoy hanging out to have a dinner once a week or there are people that need to buy new clothes every month. The fact is, that basic expenses such as the rent - are also personal good that there are already people that want to live in a cool apartment and others that do not care about living in a basement with more 4 friends.

Pensando nestas diferenças eu resolvi fazer um post com valores de gastos básicos para uma pessoa viver em Toronto. Estes valores foram baseados em pesquisas que fiz online e eu colocarei a referência por aqui. E, novamente, estou falando de uma pessoa apenas e não de um casal ou de uma família. O gasto aqui é por uma pessoa que vem para cá trabalhar e quer saber quanto deve ser o salário dele para que ele possa viver e usufruir de Toronto. No final deste post eu colocarei vários links de posts antigos que escrevi sobre o assunto aqui no blog.
Thinking about these differences I solved to do a post with values of basic expenses to a person live in Toronto. Theses values were based on researches that I did online and I will put here as reference. And, again I'm talking about just one person and not a couple or one family. The expense here is by one person that comes here to work and wants to know how should be his salary to he live and enjoy Toronto. In the end of this post, I will put various links of past posts that I wrote about the subject here in the blog.

Moradia
Comprar qualquer imóvel em Toronto está um absurdo, já que qualquer casa pequena (e até townhouses em algumas partes da cidade) já estão custando mais de 1 milhão de dólares. Então quando o assunto é moradia vamos pensar que a melhor maneira é alugar. Segundo uma pesquisa super recente (de junho de 2017) o valor de um apartamento de 1 quarto custa em média CAD$1790 por mês. Claro que você até pode alugar um quarto em um apartamento compartilhado (média de CAD$600 por mês) ou dividir um apartamento de dois quartos com um amigo (média de CAD$2300 por mês, o que daria CAD$1150 para cada). Mas o ideal seria ter o seu cantinho sem ter que dividir espaço com ninguém, não é mesmo? E é por isso que eu contarei o valor do apartamento de 1 quarto no custo final calculado no final do post.
Dwelling
Purchasing any Toronto still is insane, as any small house (until townhouse in some parts of city) are already costing more than 1 million of dollars. According to a pretty recent research (of June in 2017) the value of an 1 room apartment costs in average CAD1790 by month. Of course, you can rent a room or one shared apartment (average of 600 for month) or share one apartment of two rooms with one friend (average CAD2300 by month, what would cost 1150 for each). But the ideal it would have your own corner without share it with someone, isn't it? And that is why I will tell you the 1 room apartment in the final cost calculated in the final of the post.

Internet
Há diversos planos de internet por ai e a média do valor aqui em Toronto para uma boa conexão e uso ilimitado é de CAD$60 por mês. As operadoras mais caras são a Rogers e a Bell, mas também são as com serviço e contato mais acessível. Neste link aqui você acha uma comparação com todas as operadoras disponíveis por aqui.
Internet
There are various plans of the Internet in nearly and the average value here in Toronto to a good connection and non-limited is 60CAD for a month. The most expensive operators are Rogers and Bell, but they are too the ones with the service and contact more accessible. In this link, you can find one comparison with all available operators.

Transporte
Se você mora e trabalha no centro de Toronto não há motivos para você ter um carro por aqui – até porque você teria que gastar muito com estacionamento (no trabalho e no prédio) e certamente perderia muito tempo preso em congestionamentos. Então quando analisamos a categoria transporte os gastos ficam por conta do TTC, a companhia de transporte público de Toronto. O passe do TTC está custando hoje CAD$3.25 por trecho e digamos que você use 5 dias da semana para trabalhar, se comprasse os passes separados no final do mês gastaria CAD$130. O passe mensal custa somente CAD$16.25 a mais (CAD$146.25 por mês) e te dá direito a usar o TTC sem limites durante o mês. Esta é certamente a melhor maneira se você quer explorar a cidade nos finais de semana e usar o transporte sem se preocupar com tokens e trocos.
Transport
If you live and work in the centre of Toronto there are no reason to you have a car here - until you would have to spend a lot with parking (at job and building) and certainly would lose a lot of time stuck in the traffic. So, when we analyze the transport category the costs stay on TTC responsibility, the company of public transport in Toronto. The TTCC pass is costing 3.25 per route and lets say that if you use 5 days in the week to work, if you purchased the pass separately in the end of month you would spend 130. The month pass costs just 16.25 more, and will give you to use the TCC without limits during the month. This is certainly the best way to you explore the city in the weeks and to use the transport without worrying about tokens and changes.

Compras de supermercado
Este item é bem pessoal, já que cada um tem um jeito de fazer compras nos supermercados. Conversando com alguns amigos que moram sozinhos e cozinham nos dias de semana, uma pessoa em geral gasta CAD$125 por semana com compras, o que dá um total de CAD$500 por mês. E eu estou levando em consideração somente uma pessoa e compras do supermercado gente. Ah, e é claro que dá para economizar fazendo compras em supermercados mais baratinhos, mas eles geralmente estão mais afastados e ai tem que colocar na calculadora o preço do táxi/uber para trazer as compras e ver se vale mesmo a pena.
Purchases of supermarket
This item is pretty personal, as anyone has a way to buy groceries in the supermarkets. Talking to some friends that live alone and cook in the week days, one person spends nearly CAD125. And I'm taking into account just one person with supermarket purchases. And, of course that it is possible to save buying in the cheaper supermarket, buy they are generally further away and then you need to put them in the calculator the price of taxi/uber to do the purchases if it really worth.

Entretenimento
Como estamos falando de uma pessoa somente temos que incluir gastos com entretenimento, afinal uma pessoa solteira vai querer sair e curtir tudo que Toronto tem para oferecer. Vamos dizer que esta pessoa saia 1x por mês em um restaurante legal e pegue um menu de 3 pratos; o custo, de acordo com o Numbeo.com é de CAD$70 para 2 pessoas (CAD$35). E vamos dizer que pelo menos 1x por semana por 2 semanas esta pessoa vá a um restaurante mais simples; neles, a média de preço por pessoa (novamente segundo o Numbeo.com) custa CAD$15 (então CAD$30 para duas saídas). Vamos incluir na nossa conta 4 cafés (1 por semana ) ao custo de CAD$5 cada (CAD$20 no total) e 4 cervejas em bares ou pubs da cidade (CAD$7 cada, CAD$28). E por fim vamos incluir também uma ida ao cinema por mês (no dia mais barato) que com pipoca e refrigerante custará CAD$20 (leia mais sobre custo de ir ao cinema aqui). O total com entretenimento custa CAD$133 por mês.
Entertainment
As we are talking to only one person we have to include the costs with entertainment, as one single person will want to hang out and enjoy everything Toronto has to offer. Let's say that this person hangs out 1x per month in one cool restaurant and take one menu of 3 dish: the cost, according to the Number is 70CAD to 2 people (35CAD). And lets say that at least 1 per week and for every 2 weeks this person goes to one restaurant simpler; then, the average of price by person (again by the Numbeo.com) costs 15CAD. Let's include in our list 4 coffee, 1 per week in the cost of 5 for each one, and 4 beers in bar or pub in th ecity. At the end, lets also include one going to the cinema (cheapest one) with one popcorn and one soft drink). The cost total with entertainment costs 133 per month.

Mensalidade do celular
Novamente, a mensalidade de uma conta de celular varia muito mas em geral um bom data plan com ligações e mensagens ilimitadas custa em média CAD$50 por mês.
Mobile monthly fee
Again, the monthly fee of one mobile bill variates a lot in general with a good data plan with calls and non-limited messages costs in general 50CAD per month

Saúde
A saúde aqui é gratuita (i.e. paga através dos nossos impostos), então você não precisa se preocupar com seguro saúde. Mas se você quiser se manter ativo – e o seu edifício não tiver academia – a média do preço de uma mensalidade em uma academia na cidade custa CAD$60 por mês.
Health
The health here is free (paid through our fees), so you do not need to care about insurance health. But, if you want to keep it active and your building does not have a gym, the average of price of a monthly fee in one gym costs 60 per month

Isso mesmo, o total que uma pessoa em geral gasta para morar em Toronto está próximo dos 3 mil dólares canadenses, e olha que eu não inclui gastos com remédios, roupas, viagens e passeios de final de semana. Claro que esta é somente uma estimação e você pode economizar (ou não) em determinadas categorias. Este post é somente para ilustrar o quanto uma pessoa pode gastar por aqui e tentar ajudar aqueles que estão pensando em vir para cá mas não sabem quanto custa a vida por aqui.

Of course, if this is just an estimative and you can save in certain categories. This is just a post to illustrate how much a person can spend here and try to help those ones that are thinking to come here but they do not know how much costs the life here.
