Perda de memória e envelhecimento acelerado: os danos que a obesidade causa ao cérebro
Loss of memory and accelerated ageing: the damage of what obesity causes to the brain.
Lucy Cheke e seus colegas na Universidade de Cambridge, no Reino Unido, recentemente convidaram um grupo de voluntários para fazer uma espécie de "caça ao tesouro" em seu laboratório.
Os participantes navegavam em um ambiente virtual a partir de uma tela de computador, escondendo vários objetos pelo caminho. Em seguida, tinham de responder a uma série de perguntas para testar o quanto se lembravam do que tinham acabado de fazer.
Ao analisar o que pode ter influenciado o desempenho de cada um, seria mais lógico imaginar que Cheke estaria mais concentrada no QI do participante do que no tamanho de sua barriga.
Lucy Cheke and her colleagues of the University of Cambridge, in the UK, recently invited one group of volunteers to do a kind of treasure hunt in her lab.
The participants were surfacing in one virtual environment from one computer screen, hiding a lot of objects by the path. After that, they had to answer one series of questions to test how much they remember what they had just done.
When analysing what can influence the performance of each one, it would be more logic to imagine that Checke would be more concentrated in the participant's IC than the size of its belly.

Obesidade e 'idade mental'
Cheke partiu da hipótese de que a obesidade poderia afetar a capacidade de imaginação, pois outros estudos já comprovaram existir uma relação entre a memória e a imaginação - nosso cérebro tende a unir fragmentos de lembranças para prever como serão eventos no futuro.

Obesity and the mental age

In 2010, researchers of the School of Medicine of the University of Boston, in the United Stated, related that mid-age healthy adults, but with abdominal fat, tend to have one brain less voluminous.

Menos memória, mais quilos
Mas a obesidade é um distúrbio complexo, causado por muitos fatores. Por isso, ainda não se sabe exatamente como ela afeta a estrutura cerebral e sua função.

One inflammation in the brain can also be one of the factors. Psychologists of the university of arizona found out that the high IMC is associated with the decline of memory and high levels of one protein that indicated inflamation.

As primeiras provas disso surgiram em um estudo de 1998, feito pela Universidade da Pensilvânia, nos EUA, que mostrou que pacientes com amnésia grave estavam sempre dispostos a comer logo após uma refeição, simplesmente porque não se lembravam que já tinham se alimentado momentos antes.

Robinson and his colleagues, for example, developed one mobile app that stimulate the user to eat with more attention.
"O programa encoraja a pessoa a tirar fotos de seus pratos e a responder perguntas sobre suas refeições", explica o psicólogo. "A ideia é criar lembranças vívidas que deixem o usuário menos propenso a comer em excesso durante o resto do dia."
A equipe de Cheke também está usando um aplicativo para coletar informações sobre o estilo de vida e o comportamento alimentar de voluntários.
O objetivo é tentar isolar os vários fatores que podem contribuir com a obesidade - principalmente os que estão relacionados à estrutura e à função cerebrais.
The programme encourages the person to take photos os its plates and to answer questions about its meals, explains the psychologist. The idea is to create vivid memories that let the user less propense to overeating during the rest of the day.
The Cheke's steam also is using one app to collect information about the lifestyle and eating behaviour of the volunteers.
The goal is to try to isolate the various factors that can contribute with the obesity - mainly what are related to the structure and the brain function.
