Text: Primeiro, a boa notícia: pela primeira vez, a maioria dos países do mundo não permite a pena de morte, seja por que crime for. E agora a má: isto não impediu que fossem executadas mais pessoas em 2015 do que em quaisquer dos 25 anos anteriores, denuncia a Amnistia Internacional (AI) num relatório publicado nesta quarta-feira.

Os Estados Unidos são o quinto país onde mais se aplica a pena de morte. No ano passado fizeram 28 execuções — o número mais baixo desde 1991 —, quase metade delas no Texas, o estado mais activo na pena de morte.

Os dados divulgados anualmente pelo Centro de Informação da Pena de Morte, dos Estados Unidos, indicam que foram registadas 49 condenações, o registo mais baixo desde que a pena capital foi reinstaurada pelo Supremo Tribunal em 1976 (em 1972 tinha sido declarada inconstitucional).
