De sem-teto a milionário. A história do americano Chris Gardner virou um filme que rendeu a segunda indicação do ator Will Smith ao Oscar, The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) - no Brasil, À Procura da Felicidade. Mas, mesmo depois de enriquecer de forma tão impressionante e virar um personagem conhecido mundialmente, ele largou tudo e voltou a se reinventar.
Sua saga inicial começou na San Francisco da década de 1980. Aos 27 anos, desempregado e abandonado pela mulher, ele foi morador de rua por um ano, dormindo com o filho pequeno, Chris Jr., em abrigos da igreja, bancos de praças e banheiros públicos nas estações de trem.
A vida mudou quando ele teve a chance de participar do programa de estágio da corretora de valores Dean Witter Reynolds (DWR).
From homeless to a millionaire. The history of the American Chris became a film that earned the second indication of the actor Will Smith to the Oscar, the pursuit of happyness (2006) - in Brazil, the search to the felicity. No fim, porém, deu tudo certo. Após o estágio, Gardner foi contratado e, em 1981, obteve licença para operar oficialmente na Bolsa de Valores. Depois, conseguiu um emprego na conceituada firma Bear, Stearns & Company. Trabalhou na área de San Francisco e, em seguida, em Nova York.
Desde então, deslanchou e nunca mais parou: em 1987, tornou-se empresário independente e abriu a própria companhia, a Gardner Rich.
Aos 62 anos, Gardner tem hoje uma fortuna estimada em US$ 60 milhões (cerca de R$ 209 milhões).

Somando-se a isso o fato de que ele teve uma infância muito problemática e passou um tempo na cadeia pouco antes do estágio na DWR, fica fácil compreender porque Hollywood se interessou ao saber que ele escrevia a biografia The Pursuit of Happyness (a grafia errada em inglês foi intencional).
Olhando para trás, Gardner diz à BBC que "não mudaria nada".

Inspiring mother
Born in Milwaukee, at the state of Wisconsin, Garned was not able to know his father. He raised in the poverty near to his mother, Bettye, and of an alcoholic and violent stepfather.


Também passou um tempo com uma família adotiva depois que a mãe - num momento de desespero - tentou matar o companheiro.
Apesar das desventuras da infância, Gardner diz que ela foi uma inspiração.
"Tive uma dessas mães à moda antiga, que me dizia todos os dias: 'Filho, você pode ser ou fazer tudo o que quiser'", conta ele.
"E eu acreditava totalmente nisso."

And I believed everything on that.

O empresário lembra que um dia, quando criança, estava vendo um jogo de basquete na TV e comentou com a mãe que aqueles jogadores podiam ganhar milhões de dólares.
"Minha mãe disse: 'Filho, um dia será você que vai ganhar um milhão de dólares'. Até ela dizer isso, a ideia nunca tinha me passado pela cabeça."
Encontro casual
The entrepreneur remembers that one day, when he was a child, he was watching a basketball match on TV and commented with her mother that those players could earn million of dollars.
My mother said: "Son, one day you will earn one million of dollars". Until she says this, the idea have never through my head.

Os milhões de dólares não vieram rapidamente.
Após terminar o colégio, ele passou quatro anos na Marinha dos Estados Unidos.
Em 1974, mudou para San Francisco e começou a trabalhar como vendedor de equipamentos médicos.
Sua vida mudou completamente quando ele viu um homem numa Ferrari vermelha procurando vaga num estacionamento no centro da cidade.
The million of dollars did not come rapidly
After ending the college, he went four years in the Marine of the United States
In 1974, he changed to San Francisco and started to work as the seller of medical equipment.
His life changed completely when he saw a man in a red Ferrari searching to a vague in one park in the centre of the city.

O dono da Ferrari disse que era corretor da Bolsa de Valores, vendia ações e faturava US$ 80 mil por mês (atualmente o equivalente a R$ 278 mil).
"Naquele momento tomei duas decisões: entrar no negócio de ações e futuramente comprar uma Ferrari", conta Gardner.

In that moment o got two decisions: to join in a business of actions and buy a Ferrari in the future, Gardner tells.

O dono da Ferrari se chamava Bob Bridges - e foi ele quem conseguiu que Gardner fosse entrevistado para a vaga de estágio na DWR.
Mas não foi tão fácil.
Com US$ 1.200 (equivalentes a R$ 4.170 hoje) em multas de trânsito sem pagamento, Gardner foi parar na cadeia às vésperas da entrevista.
Ele conseguiu sair da prisão e foi direto para lá, usando as mesmas roupas com as quais tinha ficado na cadeia.

But it was not easy
With 1200 (4170 today) in fines of traffic without payment, Gardner was in the jail in the interview eve.
He was able to leave from the prison and went directly to there, using the same clothes which he was using in the jail.

Mais uma mudança de vida
Em 2012, seis anos depois do lançamento do filme, a vida de Gardner mudou novamente com a morte da sua mulher, aos 55 anos, vítima de um câncer.
A perda o fez reavaliar a vida e, depois de três décadas de muito sucesso no mercado financeiro, ele resolveu mudar completamente de carreira.
"Nas últimas conversas que tivemos, minha mulher me disse: 'Agora que vimos como a vida pode ser curta, o que você vai fazer no resto da sua'?"
In spite of the unattractive appearance, his enthusiasm and focus impressed: he got the vague. 
One more changing of life
In 2012, six years after the movie release, the Gardner's life changed again with the death of his woman, 55 years old, the victim of one cancer.
The loss made him reflected the life, and after three decades of a lot of success in the financial market, he solved to change completely of career.
In the last talks that we had, my woman said: Now that we saw how the life can be short, what would you do for the rest of your life?

"Quando se tem uma conversa dessas, tudo muda. Costumo dizer que, se você não está fazendo algo pelo qual é apaixonado, você está comprometendo cada dia da sua vida."
Ao perceber que não queria mais trabalhar na área de investimentos, Gardner se reinventou como autor de livros e especialista em palestras de motivação.
Hoje ele passa 200 dias por ano viajando pelo mundo e falando para auditórios lotados em mais de 50 países. Além disso, patrocina várias organizações que ajudam os sem-teto e combatem a violência contra as mulheres.
Scott Burns, diretor da corretora americana Morningstar, afirma que Gardner "é uma incrível demonstração de fortaleza".
Gardner afirma desmentir a teoria de que todos somos produto do ambiente em que vivemos na infância.
When we have one talk about these things, everything changes. I used to say that, if you are not doing something that you are not in love, you are compromising each day of your life".
When realising this fact and he did not want to work anymore in the area of investment, Gardner reinvented himself as actor of books and specialist in lectures of motivation.
Today he stays 200 days by year traveling by the world and talking to full auditories in more than 50 countries. In addition, he sponsors a lot of organiztions that help the homeless people and face the violence against the women.

Gardners affirms to deny the theory that everybody is product of environment in which we live in the childhood.

Ele diz que fez suas escolhas positivas graças ao amor da mãe e ao apoio que recebeu de outras pessoas.
